The Waste Management Phoenix Open and its host organization, The Thunderbirds, are huge supporters of the Special Olympics Arizona. And, as a result of the tremendous community support each year at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, The Thunderbirds have been able to make several donations to the Special Olympics organization. In addition to their financial commitment, The Thunderbirds also annually volunteer their time at the Special Olympics Summer Games. Held at Mesa Community College April 25-27, the 2013 Special Olympics Summer Games were no exception as several Thunderbirds participated in the ceremonies. The Thunderbirds and the Waste Management Phoenix Open concluded the event by awarding the Arizona chapter of the Special Olympics with a donation of $150,000.

“We spend months and countless hours each year preparing for the Waste Management Phoenix Open,” said Jim Wentworth, Thunderbird. “But, at the end of the day it’s the ability to give something back to great organization and not the weeklong success of the tournament that makes it all worthwhile. The smiles I saw on these athletes’ faces as they cross the finish line will keep me coming back for years to come.”
